BIBA Schemes & Facilities webinar - Under-declaration of medical conditions in travel insurance

Up to 30% of travellers under declare medical conditions on travel insurance, failing to understand the risks. The Financial Ombudsman Service and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office report a rise in rejected claims and uninsured cases abroad. The industry can do more.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this webinar, delegates should be able to:

  •   Identify why customers under-declare and will be able to identify primary reasons why customers fail to accurately declare medical conditions, including lack of awareness of declaration rules and failure to appreciate the financial and legal risks of non-disclosure.

  •

Describe the impact on the consumer by articulating the real-world consequences of non-disclosure for customers, including the risk of full or partial claim rejection, personal financial liability for overseas medical costs, the additional emotional burden placed on customers and their families during an already stressful emergency situation abroad, particularly if older or vulnerable.

  •

Outline the impact on the industry by explaining the broader industry consequences of under-declaration, including the effect on underwriting accuracy and pricing models, particularly in countries with higher hospital cost trends, the increased strain on FCDO consular and overseas support resources

  •

Explain what we can do to improve outcomes by describing practical actions available to them to reduce under-declaration, including delivering clear and compliant customer education throughout calls, identifying appropriate signposting moments within customer journeys, and contributing to a culture of informed, confident customer conversations that improve declaration accuracy
